This eBook is an overview of causes and treatment of erectile dysfunction and loss of libido.

Erectile dysfunction is an inability to develop and maintain an erection for a gratifying sexual intercourse or activity in the absence of any abnormality of ejaculation such as premature ejaculation. It also indicates a tendency to sustain only brief erections. Though erectile dysfunction is not a definite sign of aging, more people get affected by this disorder as they become older. Erectile dysfunction has a high incidence and prevalence rate - 5% at 40 years of age and 15-25% at 70 years of age.

Though many people still relate erectile dysfunction to psychological factors, there are indeed many physical factors which can lead to erectile dysfunction like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, drugs, alcohol and smoking. 80% of the cases of erectile dysfunction are due to physical causes and the remaining 20% due to psychological causes. There are two types of erectile dysfunction – organic and psychogenic. If the erectile dysfunction persists it affects the person’s self esteem. It also affects his and his partner’s sex life. Moreover erectile dysfunction may be marker of a serious physical illness like diabetes, hypertension or may be factor of psychological illness which all warrant an immediate attention. One should know that in most of the cases the cause of erectile dysfunction is medically reversible if medical attention is given on time.

Loss of libido is a condition resulting from diverse group of conditions in which the adults lack sexual desire and are not able to actively involve in sex. It is not an occasional loss of interest in sex, but a persistent one experienced over a period of months together. It is estimated that about 15% of men and 30% of women suffer from loss of libido. Loss of libido bothers the men more than women.
Erection is a complex phenomenon facilitated by the interaction between the nervous system, hormonal system and the blood vessels. If any of these is out of order, a satisfactory erection cannot be achieved.
There are various treatment options available for erectile dysfunction like drugs, vacuum devices, penile implants and alternative treatments like nutritional supplements, herbal therapies and acupuncture.
